What Are the Ivy League MBA Programs?

Many of those looking for a good management education will dream of getting into the Ivy League MBA schools. These offer an unbeatable education that is going to open so many doors for you. However getting into one of the programs is not going to be easy at all. Because of their reputation, they are highly sought after and very selective as to who they will admit. Your MBA personal statements and other application documents need to be something else if you are to get any chance of an interview.

There is confusion over where the original name came from for the Ivy League, some say that it came simply from the ivy that grows up the various institutions while others point to the fact that the original 4 were members of the IV athletics league. It truly came into being however in 1954 when the big 8 formed the Council of Ivy Group Presidents at Princeton University.

The original 4 Ivy league universities were Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and Harvard. These were later joined by Brown, Pennsylvania, Dartmouth and Cornell. Not all, however, have a business school. Neither Brown nor Princeton have a business school.

Who Are the Ivy League MBA Schools?

The following is a list of 6 Ivy League business schools as they are ranked by the Financial Times MBA rankings:

Applying to Your Selected Ivy League Business School

The following will detail each of the different business schools and what you will need to do to get yourself accepted:

Harvard Business School

harvard business schoolGetting into Harvard will require far more than just the best Harvard MBA personal statement. Acceptance rates for Harvard University run at just 5.2% making this one of the most selective places you can apply to. They accept only the best candidates and you will have to provide all of the following with your application:

  • GMAT or GRE Scores
  • Transcripts (you must have at least a bachelors degree)
  • English Language test scores
  • 2 Letters of recommendation
  • Resume
  • Fee ($250)
  • Harvard MBA essay

The Harvard MBA application essays must answer the following prompt: “As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?”

When answering this prompt you have no word limit, however, you must not go on and on! No member of the admissions committee is going to want to read the equivalent of War and Peace for your whole life story. They want to get to know who you are in your own words. Don’t just regurgitate what is already in your resume and other information.

The Wharton School of Business

wharton school of businessWharton at the University of Pennsylvania is another highly selective b school. Your Wharton MBA essay and the rest of your documentation must be highly engaging and effective if you are to be one of the just 9.4% of applicants that are accepted each year. The following are the requirements for applying to their MBA program:

  • Background information form
  • Fee ($265)
  • 2 Letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts
  • GMAT or GRE scores
  • English test results
  • Resume

Your Wharton MBA application essays must answer these two prompts:

  • Essay 1: What do you hope to gain professionally from the Wharton MBA? (500 words)
  • Essay 2: Describe an impactful experience or accomplishment that is not reflected elsewhere in your application. How will you use what you learned through that experience to contribute to the Wharton community? (500 words)

The admissions committee will be looking for you to be honest and thoughtful with your answers as they are looking to understand the type of person you are on a personal and professional level.

Columbia Business School

columbia business schoolWriting an effective ColumbiaMBA essay is just one part of getting your application approved and being invited for an interview. The University accepts around just 6.04% of those that apply to them each year. The following is a list of the requirements for your application:

  • GPA
  • Transcripts
  • GMAT or GRE
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Application Fee ($250)
  • Columbia university personal statement

The Columbia MBA essay is, in fact, three separate essays plus a short answer question and an additional optional essay if you would like to bring anything to their attention. The main essays are:

  • Essay 1: Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3-5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long-term dream job? (500 words)
  • Essay 2: How will you take advantage of being “at the very center of business”? (250 words)
  • Essay 3: Please provide an example of a team failure of which you have been a part. If given a second chance, what would you do differently? (250 words)

The first Columbia personal statement essay is fairly standard however do not make it sound so rigid that it would be impossible to change as you grow. The 2nd Columbia MBA personal statement essay requires you to also watch a short video around which you should base your writing. The 3rd Columbia MBA essay you should very much concentrate on the what you would do differently.

Yale School of Management

yale school of managementYale, as you might expect, is one of the most selective places to apply to and they admit just 6.2% of those that apply each year. So your Yale MBA essay and other information must be truly outstanding if you are to have any chance of getting selected for an interview. The following are the requirements for your application:

  • Your academic records
  • GMAT or GRE test scores
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE for non native English speakers
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Yale MBA essay

The personal statement for MBA required by Yale probably has one of the shortest prompts this year: Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made. (500 words)

Rather than talking about what you would like to do in the future they would like to get a better sense of you by hearing what you have already done. They want to understand what you are likely to get involved in and how you follow through on what you do.

Tuck School of Business

tuck school of businessDartmouth College accepts only 10.5% of those applying so if you want to have any chance of making an impact with your application to get an interview you must ensure your Tuck MBA essay is something outstanding. The following are the requirements for making your application to Tuck:

  • Completed application form
  • Fee ($250)
  • Transcripts
  • GMAT or GRE testing scores
  • IELTS, PTE or TOEFL scores for overseas applicants
  • 2 Letters of reference
  • Resume
  • Tuck admissions essays

The essay and question requirements by Tuck are more extensive than some of the others. They require answers to the following:

Application Short-Answer Questions

  1. Share your short term goals. (50 words)
  2. Share your long term goals. (50 words)
  3. How did you arrive at these goals? (75 words)
  4. How will Tuck help you achieve these goals? (75 words)

Essay Questions

  1. Tuck students are aware of how their individuality adds to the fabric of Tuck. Tell us who you are and what you will contribute. (500 words)
  2. Tuck students are nice and invest generously in one another’s success. Share an example of how you helped someone else succeed. (500 words)
  3. Optional: Please provide any additional insight or information that you have not addressed elsewhere (e.g., atypical choice of evaluators, factors affecting academic performance, unexplained job gaps or changes). Complete this question only if you feel your candidacy is not fully represented by this application.
  4. To be completed by all reapplicants: How have you strengthened your candidacy since you last applied? Please reflect on how you have grown personally and professionally. (500 words)

As with the other Ivy League business schools you must ensure that your answers are concise and honest. They expect them to be thoughtfully written and it must be clear that they are your own original thoughts.

Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management

samuel curtis johnson graduate school of managementCornell University accepts a huge 13.96% of applicants, although this is just a fraction of what most other universities in the US will accept. Being one of the few that will get an invite for an interview will mean ensuring that your application and Cornell MBA essay are perfectly written. The following are what is expected for your application to this Ivy League business school:

  • Application fee
  • Transcripts
  • 1 letter of recommendation (2nd optional)
  • IELTS or TOEFL test results
  • GRE or GMAT test results
  • Cornell MBA essay

The Cornell personal statement is actually made up of 3 separate essays. The following are the essays that you will need to write:

  • Goals Statement: A statement of your goals will begin a conversation that will last throughout the admissions process and guide your steps during the MBA program and experience. To the best of your understanding today, please share your short and long term goals by completing the following sentences and answering the enclosed short answer question (250 words maximum):

Immediately post-MBA, my goal is to work as a(n) ____[Role]____ at ___[Company]___within___[Industry]___.Targeted Job Role:

Target Job Company:

Industry:

In 5 – 10 years post-MBA, my goal is to work as a(n) ____[Role]____ at ___[Company]___within___[Industry]___.

Targeted Job Role:

Target Job Company:

Industry:

How has your experience prepared and encouraged you to pursue these goals?

  • Impact Essay: At Cornell, we value students who create impact. Please indicate the opportunities for impact that you’ve identified through engagement with our community and describe how what you learned has influenced your decision to apply to Johnson. (500 words)

Back of Your Resume Essay

The front page of your resume has given us a sense of your professional experience and accomplishments as well as your academic summary and extracurricular involvement. If the back page reflects “the rest of your story,” please help us get to know you better by sharing the experiences that will give us insight into your character, values, and interests. (500 words or 5mins multimedia presentation)

The statement of goals should be completed with care and you should be totally honest as you will often be asked to elaborate on this within your interview. The impact essay is really your opportunity to explain why you are applying to them.
